Now it's time for Bargnani the Bad....
Let's kick it off right away with the patented T.Jose Caldeford STAT OF THE DAY (TM)
STAT OF THE DAY
FEWEST ASSISTS PER GAME
AMONG 20 PPG SCORERS THIS SEASON
Dwight Howard 1.1
Andrea Bargnani 1.4
Jason Richardson 1.5
Michael Beasley 1.6
Kevin Love 2.1
Quick asides:
- First, can we get rid of that "Kevin Love is such a great passer" argument until he bumps up his assist totals a bit?
- Jason Richardson is the only guard on this list... He really is a chucker.
So, 1st point out of the way: Andrea isn't a very good passer.

ANDREA BARGNANI SHOT DISTRIBUTION
(courtesy 82games.com)
3% dunks/tips
16% close range
81% jump shots
So, 2nd point out of the way: Despite taking fewer threes (as mentioned in my previous post), the 7-foot Bargnani is still predominantly a jump shooter.

RAPTORS THIS SEASON
(courtesy 82games.com)
WITH BARGNANI ON THE FLOOR: 108 pts / 100 possessions
& ON THE BENCH: 111 pts / 100 possessions
WITH BARGNANI ON THE FLOOR: 114 pts allowed / 100 possessions
& ON THE BENCH: 102 pts allowed / 100 possessions
WITH BARGNANI ON THE FLOOR: Raps get 52% of avail rebounds
& ON THE BENCH: Raps get 55% of avail rebounds
In summation: Toronto's offence is 3 pts better per 100 possessions when Bargnani's on the bench; Toronto's defence is 12 pts better per 100 possessions when Bargnani's on the bench; and Toronto's rebounding is 3 percent better when Bargnani's on the bench.
Wow.
So, 3rd point out of the way: The Raptors are better offensively, defensively, and on the glass when Bargnani is on the bench (maybe those are my 3rd, 4th, & 5th points).
In another (final) summation:
1st point: Despite being the team's focal point on offence, Bargnani is not a good passer.
2nd point: Despite being a 7-footer (and having a pretty soft touch inside), Bargnani remains a jump shooter.
3rd point: Toronto is better offensively with him on the bench.
4th point: Toronto is better defensively with him on the bench.
5th point: Toronto is better on the glass with him on the bench.
That's ugly.
I have to say, these numbers are more up my alley when it comes to the stuff that I "buy" so to speak (compared to the pro-Bargnani stuff I was spewing out a few days back). So, even though I've been pretty pro-Bargnani so far this season, that probably ends tonight.

Well, fuck.
Wow is right! Intuition told me that Bargnani was a liablility but these numbers are damning. Great analysis. So given that Colangelo seems to have pinned his career in Toronto on this guy how can the Raptors improve while this guy is still a major part of the team? Triano has his work cut out for him.
Bargnani plays against starters, when he is not on the floor, neither are the other teams best players. Bargnani is not the problem on this team. As has been the case since a certain #15 left town, our problem is a lack of legitimate NBA starters at the 2/3 position.
Timing! My statophile post this morning hinted you should look at assists, shot effectiveness, etc of Bargnani's game as well. And voila.
Good post.
Chris,
This post is right on the money!
You have to take into account that Bargnani plays against the best for the other team. Is there a metric to account for that?
"You have to take into account that Bargnani plays against the best for the other team. Is there a metric to account for that?"
but he is supposed to be 'the best' for this team is he not? Should that not account for anything.
Bargs supporters are really starting to run out of weak excuses for the crap he drops on the court.
Correct conclusion: our bench plays better against other teams' benches than our starters play against other team's starters.
Incorrect conclusion: Bargnani is, uuhhh, no good, uhhhh, Raptors are better off with Bargs wearing Armani, uhhh, what was your conclusion?
Win or lose, this is the best Raptors team I've watched in years, and Bargs is a big reason for that...
Ha ha. PRetty funny that your post came out on the same day that he dropped 41 and had 6 assists.
Let's hold the stats for a bit on Bargnani and see what he can do to continue to up his game.
I think there's still some more statistical evidence i need to see before we can really come to any conclusions.
My intuitive hypothesis from watching the games and seeing these preliminary stats is as follows:
When Bargnani is playing well (read: scoring) the Raps as a whole benefit.
BUT
since scoring is just one aspect of the game and he doesn't do the others very well, the amount he helps his team when he's playing well is more than negated by how much he hurts the team when he's not scoring (and not doing much else either).
So to state it more clearly: When Bargnani is playing well (above his average, lets say) he helps his team. BUT when he is playing badly (below his average, say) he REALLY hurts his team.
I think the fact that his defence and rebounding seem to make small strides when he is scoring well also adds to this hypothesis.
The question then becomes, can he produce(score) what's necessary to help, rather than hurt, his team consistently?
Thoughts?
All I have to say is this. If we can't find a legit C to play with Bargnani then we might as well trade him. Barg is a PF not a C in this league. The reason why Bosh and Barg never worked was because they were virtually the same person, just that Bosh was better down low and Barg had the better 3 point shot.
If we got Chandler from the Bobcats, i think Barg would be a much better and different player this year. We need a guy like Chandler to play with Barg. Maybe we should go after Meka!
